Celebrity Fashion Designer Javon Parris stopped by Wavelinkradio.com to talk about the inspiration behind his clothing line, working with today’s hottest celebrities and his transition from college basketball star to fashion designer. Having the entrepreneurial spirit in him since childhood, Javon shadowed his fashion mentor to prefect his craft and quietly begin to work on his line for two years. That line became known to the world as Von Parris, a line in which “Urban America meet Metro Europe.” Von Parris has gained celebrity supporting from Trey Songz, Fabolous and more. 2.How has being a teacher and having a career in education helped you as an author? I taught ten years in the classroom; two years were in 5th grade and eight years was teaching 4th grade. In 4th grade students must take a state writing test (expository/narrative) every year to show proficiency in writing. And of course I enjoyed teaching narrative writing more than expository. We worked at creating different plots, how to bring characters to life, and how to create and resolve conflicts in the story. My nineteen years in education has always been at the elementary level; I enjoy visiting classroom and sitting down at lunch listening to children talk about their favorite book or talk about things they are interested in or would enjoy reading.

3.Was there any specific reason or inspiration behind the novel? The inspiration for writing the book is based on childhood memories of some of the mishaps we created when we were little girls (3 sisters). My father called us his little Crumb Snatchers. Our family cat was Heidi who had her own adventures. We were a close family who loved each other very much. It was never a dull moment in our home.

4. What is your take on the world of publishing and how have you personally found it to be for you?
The traditional route of publishing will probably be on the bucket list of most writers because of the prestige it may offer. However, I think the world of self-publishing or independent publishing has opened up a new avenue for writers to submit their manuscript and be actively involved in the entire process the front cover to cover. At least it has for me. I believe today many authors have found and are finding success in the self-publishing arena. In that, I believe traditional publishing companies are taking note and offering self-publishers the opportunity to allow them to publish their work. After researching numerous companies (traditional and nontraditional) I decided to self-publish because I wanted to be have total rights and have a voice in the whole publishing process. I did not want the hassle or agony of waiting years to see my manuscript in print.

5. What would you say is the most rewarding part in writing a book for children? I believe the most rewarding part in writing a book for children is watching their face light up when they read my book. Every author wants to know what readers think about their work; at least that is true for me. I am told by adults that they like the book or the story is really cute. Great, but I love to hear from children. They are so honest and they tell you exactly how it is and what they like or don’t like about your book. My kid reviews have been wonderful from kindergartners to fifth graders. I am stopped by many of the students around the school and they say, “I love your book Mrs. Thompson or my favorite character is ” This is rewarding to me. I usually ask them what they would like to see the characters do in the next book. They are full of ideas and they say some pretty unexpected things.

6.Why do you think quality illustrations are a big importance to children’s novels? Illustrations are a big importance because they allow children to understand the story from a graphic perspective. Also, I believe illustrations allow students to experience and make connections to themselves, the text, and the world around.

7. Aside from your current book are their any other genres your looking to get into writing? As a writer I enjoy writing as a passion, but besides children books I would like to write a mystery who did it type novel and of course spiritual, and inspirational type books.

8. What is one thing you get out of writing and one thing you’d like to get out of it? Writing is a passion as I stated, however I experience a sense of calmness and comfort when I write. There is no stress, just my thoughts colliding on how I want to develop my plot and characters to bring clarity and interest to readers. My hope is that readers will enjoy what’s written and reread the book again and again.

9. Do you believe it is good for children to start reading at a young age? I think children should begin reading at a young age because they begin to make connections with the author, the illustrator, and text (vocabulary) on a page. I believe children should start to read at a young age because they began to comprehend the text, develop a purpose for reading, and acquire other skills such as recognizing the main idea, inference, and predicting while reading

10. What’s something else you can tell us about yourself? First, I am a Christian and believe that Jesus Christ is my Savior and my Great I Am. Next, I love to inspire others to be the best they can be at all times and to be leaders within themselves first by making positive decisions in life. Last, I encourage children to hold on to their dreams and never stop believing that they can achieve it.
